In this guide, we aim to set out some simple steps to help anyone wanting to utilise a wall plate into their home or office.
1. Decide what you want to get from your wall plate i.e. do you just want one port such as HDMI or do you want more ports for multiple outputs?
2. What type of wall plate suits your needs best? Cut-outs are very versatile and loaded wall plates may require some soldering so this is something to be aware of.
3. Where do you want your cables to run? Careful planning should be taken into consideration before you start the actual installation. Map out where you want the cables to run before starting.
4. How do you want to route your cables? Do you want to run your cables through the walls from one room to another? Would it be more beneficial to score a groove into a wall to sit the cables in that can then be plastered over to give the same effect. Lastly, plastic trunking could be used to route cables along walls.
5. Ensure you have all the correct tools and safety equipment necessary to set up your wall plate system.
The type of wall plays an important factor in wall plate installation. A wall plate can be mounted directly to any wood surface but for plasterboard walls, a support may have to be used. Brick or concrete walls may need to have a surface mountable back box that can be secured to the surface.
Connecting the necessary cables to the wall plate can differ from installation to installation. Some connectors simply push or screw in but others may require a certain level of soldering (please be aware of this before commencing). However, fully assembled wall plates are available that come complete with all cables attached and a back box.
Cable type should be another consideration since different cable standards have their own limitations. For instance, a HDMI cable will start to suffer from signal attenuation after 15-metres and therefore requires an HDMI extender to further boost the signal. Similarly, USB cables only have a 5-metre range without a booster.
Once everything is set up, it is important to test all the cables and connections before making any finishing touches to the installation. By doing this you will save yourself the unwanted headaches, rather than having to pull any cables that you may have already routed.
Once you are satisfied that everything is working as it should, you can then proceed to finalising the installation. All loose ends can be tidied up, wall plates can be fastened and trunking covers or plaster can be added or finished. This then leaves you ready to do the important stuff, which of course, is to enjoy your new wall plate system.
